PHOTOIONIZATION LAMPS

KRYPTON AND XENON FILLING

Photoionization lamps are used as ionization sources in gas analyzers, gas chromatography detectors, mass-spectrometry and other devices.

The radiation spectrum of  photoionization  lamps In VUV-range consists of two resonance lines 116,5 and 123,5 nm for krypton lamps and  129,6 and 147,0 nm for xenon lamps. To extract the radiation MgF2 window is used.

Several models of both DC and RF photoionization lamps are manufactured. The advantages of DC lamps are high stability and long life time. The RF lamps are less stable and the life time is shorter, their advantages are small size and low power consumption.

The lamps with glass and ceramic discharge channel are available. During lamp operation  plasma interacts with discharge channel. For glass this results in emission of O2, CO, CO2, H2O etc molecules, that changes the gas filling of lamp and leads to lamp failure. There is no such change when ceramic channel is used, that has been confirmed by lamp spectra, where the lines of radiating gas  present only.

Using of ceramic discharge channel increases the lamp life-time up to 10000 h, that allows to use such lamps in fixed point photionization detectors.

PHOTOIONIZATION LAMPS

ARGON FILLING

 The radiation spectrum of  argon photoionization  lamps in VUV-range consists of two resonance lines 104,8 nm  (11, 8 eV) и 106,7 nm  (11.6 eV) and low-intensity continuum in the range of 130 nm. The discharge channel is made from glass. To extract the radiation LiF window is used.

Warning!

When using argon photoionization lamps follow the next rules:

1. Do not clean the lamp window with any organic solvents except methanol;

2. Operating current no more than 1,2 mA.

3. Operating temperature no more than  40 °C.
